8. Inspect the mist eliminator section of the cooling tower at least monthly to ensure that the mist eliminators are intact and free of biomass. Repair and or clean immediately, if needed. 9. Shield or cover wetted surfaces from sunlight to prevent the growth of algae. 10. Prevent the buildup of sessile biomass particularly in "film fill" by the use of an approved bio-control program. Inspect and log at least monthly. 11. If possible, shut the cooling tower down at least twice per year for a good manual chemical cleaning. Pay particular attention to getting the basin, film fill, and drift eliminators clean. A specific procedure can be utilized for cooling tower systems that can be shut down or for "on-line" cleaning/disinfection. 12. Provide, instruct, and assure operators properly use safety equipment to handle chemicals and enforce use. This is an OSHA requirement.13. Provide, instruct, and assure operators properly use appropriate facemasks to minimize cooling tower drift inhalation. This also is an OSHA requirement.
